We eat a lot of popcorn. We love it because it’s inexpensive, filling and the perfect snack for binge-watching TV and movie night alike! Microwave popcorn is so easy but there is always that odd odor, slimy film, and it just doesn’t taste quite right. Not to mention the potential health effects of the chemicals used (see the details below) and the waste of the bags and the plastic wrappers . We’ve also used one of those Stainless Steel Stove Top Popper (it’s one of those retro looking poppers with a crank in the handle that keeps the popcorn circulating around the heat and oil at the bottom of the pot). It makes great popcorn but it can be a bit of an ordeal to use and clean up afterward. Then we found the best of both worlds! The Lékué silicone microwave popper makes healthy popcorn without the waste! And it’s so quick! You’re gonna wanna try it!
Fact: This popper makes homemade, delicious and healthy popcorn without the waste and it tastes better than microwave popcorn. Drop mic. Walk off stage.
Eat Healthy, Less Waste
My BFF who, knowing our enthusiasm for popcorn, gave it to us as a gift and once we tried it, we were hooked! It’s quick, it’s easy to clean up, and there are no bags or wrappers to go in the landfill. Add your choice of oil and seasoning, your favorite popcorn (we love the tricolor bulk popcorn from Whole Foods), and in less than two minutes you’ll have a delicious snack! And since you control the amount of oil and the toppings, you can make it a healthy snack. So if you’re into popcorn like we are, you’re going to L-O-V-E, love this little silicone microwave popcorn popper. I probably should have included it in my post on the 10 kitchen gadgets we love and actually use!
Our microwave popcorn formula: We use 2 tablespoons safflower oil, about 1/2 tablespoon dried spice mix of choice, 1/3 cup popcorn kernels, microwave for 1 minute 45 seconds to 2 minutes or until there are fewer than 3 seconds between pops (microwave times may vary).
The Reason for the Season-ing
We use a variety of seasonings from Kirkland Organic No-Salt Seasoning (my personal favorite) to Trader Joe’s Mushroom & Company Multipurpose Umami Seasoning Blend (this is stuff is crazy good; it doesn’t taste like mushrooms to me, just awesomeness). Or, to keep it simple, sometimes we simply top it with a sprinkle of Himalayan Pink Salt. There’s a world of seasonings and popcorn shakes out there, so the sky’s the limit. Go wild!
The Health Concern
There is a health-related concern behind our love for this silicone popcorn popper. Microwave popcorn bags previously contained perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) to prevent the butter and/or oil from leaking from the microwave popcorn bags. PFCs were suspected of causing cancer and other diseases and are they’re no longer used, however, little is known about the chemical compounds that replaced them.
The Final Verdict
Five out of 5 popcorn experts (my family, we are experts you know!) agree, this silicone microwave popcorn popper is the easiest way to make delicious and healthy popcorn without the waste!! So call dibs on your favorite spot on the couch and make a few bowls of popcorn for your entire family! Happy popping!!
