How to Celebrate New Year’s Eve 2020

Like everything else in 2020, New Year’s Eve will be a little different this year. It will be celebrated by Zoom, in small groups, or only with immediate family. So let’s punch 2020 in the face and put together a New Year’s Eve celebration that’s anything but dull. By gathering a few supplies from the grocery store, dusting off old board games, and dressing up your favorite jeans with a fancy top, you can make New Year’s Eve 2020 one to remember.

Prep the bar

Our gathering will include our two adult college-aged kids, my husband, and me. We’ll be serving up beer and wine, Old-Fashioneds and Dirty Martinis. For the Old-Fashioneds I’ll need oranges, bitters, whiskey, simple syrup, and Maraschino Cherries. For my favorite drink, the Dirty Martini, I’ll need Vermouth (extra-dry), Bombay Sapphire Gin, and Queen olives. To add a little fun to the evening, we’re going to do a tasting of sparkling wines, so I also plan to buy a variety of canned sparkling wines. (No seriously, they’re really good!)

Dress up your everyday jeans with a shimmery top

Since we’re staying home this year, I wanted to dress up but also be comfortable. So I bought this ruffle trim shell before the holidays knowing that I would need a little glam for New Year’s Eve to feel dressed up while wearing jeans for comfort. But you can choose anything from your closet like an old bridesmaid dress or a gown! Wear whatever puts you in the party mood.

Create a charcuterie board

Charcuterie boards are made with at least three types of cured meats and two cheeses and whatever else floats your boat. I plan to add all our favorites like black olives, berries, veggies, nuts, dips, spreads, crackers and a sliced baguette. There’ll be something for everyone and most items can be left out for hours. I want my family to feel like they’re at a big party.

Bake a decadent dessert

Having something a little over the top will elevate the evening and make it feel special. I’m making Flourless Chocolate Cake covered with Chocolate Ganache. It tastes as good as it looks. Plus, it’s surprisingly simple to make.

Play upbeat music to set the tone

We like to jam out to a variety of genres at our house. We love the playlists Spotify curates based on our eclectic preferences. I can’t wait to hear what it comes up with for New Year’s Eve this year!

Break out the board games

Playing board games together is a great way to get everyone involved. A few of our favorite board games are Sorry, Trivial Pursuit, Sequence, and our new favorite, Incoherent.

Watch a New Year’s Eve Special and the Ball Drop

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2021 starts at 8pm EST. Although many networks have specials that start later in the evening.

And, last, but not least….

Ring in the New Year

Enjoy your favorite bubbly beverage! – Champagne, Prosecco, or sparkling wine – while wishing your favorite people Happy New Year!!! Champagne doesn’t agree with my head so I prefer a Prosecco (Costco sells an awesome one!), sparkling wine, or a spritzer. Whichever is your favorite will top the night off with style!!!
